Every year, I look forward to the arrival of the herring in Nanoose Bay. Their presence transforms the coastline—the water turns a surreal milky turquoise, birds and sea lions gather in a frenzy, and for a brief moment, the entire ecosystem shifts. Their impact on the sea is undeniable, a reminder of how life moves in cycles, fleeting but essential.
I write more about the herring spawn itself in this blog.
